So, here he is: the first model I've painted since my break. I wanted to paint up a character figure, that I'd really enjoy painting, in order to get back into the swing of things. But I didn't want to make things too simple. If anything, I wanted to jump in at the deep end. This guy has blue armour, something I've never done before, yellow robes, that I've never done before, a new type of power sword, that I've never done before, and OSL, which I've never really done before. This should go well!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yoHW_5B3QCA/U3ewzf8N-kI/AAAAAAAAApY/D3EbAs7l1NU/s1600/IMG_2804.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yoHW_5B3QCA/U3ewzf8N-kI/AAAAAAAAApY/D3EbAs7l1NU/s1600/IMG_2804.JPG" height="320" width="307" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jky6Aaa3nTc/U3exGHh9pAI/AAAAAAAAApg/8vlzU0Dgsps/s1600/IMG_2805.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jky6Aaa3nTc/U3exGHh9pAI/AAAAAAAAApg/8vlzU0Dgsps/s1600/IMG_2805.JPG" height="320" width="301" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yZKn5kYXrn8/U3exIaSZRII/AAAAAAAAApo/gMe6r9TLZzM/s1600/IMG_2803.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yZKn5kYXrn8/U3exIaSZRII/AAAAAAAAApo/gMe6r9TLZzM/s1600/IMG_2803.JPG" height="284" width="320" /></a></div>
The armour and robes were kind of a stab in the dark. I wanted to do something slightly off the norm, while staying within the codex colours. For the robes, I painted them up as I would any cream robes, and glazed them yellow. The armour was based with Kantor Blue, but then I went with Sotek Green, Temple Guard Blue, and Baharroth Blue. I don't know, but I feel like it's far enough from the norm to stand out, but enough to still be clearly identifiable as a Librarian.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d97GrPNZVOQ/U3exLKMtHTI/AAAAAAAAApw/HJV6S3nEDJw/s1600/IMG_2806.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d97GrPNZVOQ/U3exLKMtHTI/AAAAAAAAApw/HJV6S3nEDJw/s1600/IMG_2806.JPG" height="320" width="244" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wZUBD6K5FCs/U3exNaQfB3I/AAAAAAAAAp4/JQASeus-TqQ/s1600/IMG_2807.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wZUBD6K5FCs/U3exNaQfB3I/AAAAAAAAAp4/JQASeus-TqQ/s1600/IMG_2807.JPG" height="320" width="261" /></a><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The shoulder pads are both made at least partially with greenstuff. The chapter symbol was cast from a mould I have and then trimmed down, nothing too fancy. The librarians symbol on the other hand was a pain. The one on the model was the third attempt, but it was something that I was determined to do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-owb4owlJaSM/U3eu1aQ2HJI/AAAAAAAAApE/XLeOAStxWzI/s1600/IMG_2802.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-owb4owlJaSM/U3eu1aQ2HJI/AAAAAAAAApE/XLeOAStxWzI/s1600/IMG_2802.JPG" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fz4czgDGF50/U3eu3w5_mJI/AAAAAAAAApM/UAi3MgDsUX4/s1600/IMG_2801.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fz4czgDGF50/U3eu3w5_mJI/AAAAAAAAApM/UAi3MgDsUX4/s1600/IMG_2801.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
The power sword was something that I really wanted to try, as the model is intended to use pyromancy, if the discipline continues into the next edition. I knew what I wanted, and how to do it, but looked up a few tutorials online to back me up. Confident that I wasn't going to balls it up, I went on and did it. I'll post up a tutorial in a week or so, with a spare sword, because I didn't take any WIP pics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y-_mIUnxnOg/U3exWwMaboI/AAAAAAAAAqM/RZneYNtHn_M/s1600/IMG_2800.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y-_mIUnxnOg/U3exWwMaboI/AAAAAAAAAqM/RZneYNtHn_M/s1600/IMG_2800.JPG" height="320" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is where the fun began; my previous attempts at OSL involved precisely zip. I kinda just winged it, but basically I blended from red, through orange and into white at the centre. The blends aren't really smooth, and its not winning any golden demons, but when its not zoomed in twenty times like this pic, it looks pretty good I think. Any mistakes are really hidden by the tiny size of the area. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all, I had a great time painting this guy up, and I have already started painting a few tactical marines. I also have a conversion finished to paint up after them. Hobby time will be limited this week as I have exams, but thereafter it's the summer! I love being a student! Finally, here's a sneak peek of next week! </div>

So my fellow bloggers, I'm back! After a hiatus I'm launching myself into the hobby again. College life, a ridiculous level of commuting, and recently a part time job on top of that! The free time that I had spent in activities that involved no concentration! This meant that my hobby got put to one side for a while. In many ways I'm actually happy about that, but that's for another post. This one is just here to say, I'm back!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My plans for the hobby now, are clearer than when I took the break. The painting side of things is what interests me most, and as such, that is what I will focus on. I will be painting models individually, with a vague aim of building up an army bit by bit. The first goal is 750 points of my favourite army: my Iron Lords. I will be interspersing painting the rank and file guys, with more interesting single figures, not always necessarily to do with the army. Many of these will make up an inquisitorial warband, that can support my army. I have already gotten started, and painted up a model to get me back into the swing of things. Stay tuned, as I will be posting him tomorrow. For now though, here's a small peek. </div>

This one is mostly the Armies on Parade at the event. Some may not be there, but it was kinda' crowded. Some of these are truly stunning. An inspiration to us all! The photos aren't great and they aren't in order, sorry in advance! As a side, I tried to publish this a few days ago, but it didn't go through and I only noticed now!<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I1deV73aBSI/UkxMs_9GvuI/AAAAAAAAAhg/uq_RUc9WKKc/s640/blogger-image-2009038747.jpg" imageanchor="1"><span style="margin-left: 1em; Part 2<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've already answered that in <a href="http://17yearoldhobbyist.blogspot.ie/2013/09/is-competitive-play-dead-in-6th-ed-part.html">part 1</a>. While that post was more about why I believe that competitive play isn't dead in the new edition of warhammer 40k. This one is more about how I believe it has changed, right at it's roots. </div>

<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NuCDrde4IVg/UkCiPyCGvmI/AAAAAAAAAYs/B7Mw7GVDkJw/s640/blogger-image-764244613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NuCDrde4IVg/UkCiPyCGvmI/AAAAAAAAAYs/B7Mw7GVDkJw/s400/blogger-image-764244613.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We all remember the nature of competitive play in previous editions of the game. Who didn't try their hand at competitive list building or using Internet tactics? I certainly did. And I only really play for fun! My point is that these things have taken a back seat in the new edition. You simply can't build a list to cope with a large portion of situations that can arise in a game. As for tactics, if you stick too religiously to Internet ones, you will be punished. You have to, more than ever, be able to adapt to the changing situations. With ever more left to chance now, the situation can change in a mere handful of dice rolls. With overwatch and psychic powers, a lot more of the game is now based on dice rolls. Your prized unit could become red mist in a hail of BS 1 shots, or your opponents expensive pysker could roll crummy powers, then blow himself up. And with even more options in the new codices, along with allies and fortifications, there are too many possibilities to cover.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is where it has changed: you CANNOT win any game before it starts. Deployment is, as ever, vital, but after that comes the change. Pick each of your units, assign them a role, and stick to it. </div>
<div>
I'll take my Khorne army as an example. The general idea was to rush my opponent with as many combat units as possible. It would take extreme discipline and vision to plan in the long run to win against multiple turn 2/3 threats. I then had a few small units of cultists to capture objectives. I would send my berserkers in rhinos to kill off troops such as guardsmen, scouts and guardians. My Maulerfiend rushed at the closest tank, to wreck it quickly. My terminators went for heavy infantry and light tanks. My possessed then ran interference, trying to hold up a unit until the berserkers and terminators finished their job.</div>
<div>
The reason this worked, was that my plan would guarantee victory if all parts preformed, BUT, some were given easy jobs, so they could still make a difference when they helped those who had tougher jobs. It didn't always win, but it did pretty well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-c0l_m7DtVyg/UkCiMk7CC5I/AAAAAAAAAYc/ACiJgalil2Q/s640/blogger-image-1559419859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-c0l_m7DtVyg/UkCiMk7CC5I/AAAAAAAAAYc/ACiJgalil2Q/s320/blogger-image-1559419859.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gUEwQnwZTrI/UkCiOAopalI/AAAAAAAAAYk/FVD2bh8vaBI/s640/blogger-image--731164826.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gUEwQnwZTrI/UkCiOAopalI/AAAAAAAAAYk/FVD2bh8vaBI/s200/blogger-image--731164826.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
That's the point, make a plan, with a doable job for each unit, and you'll do well. Fail to stick to the plan, and its over. But you must be willing to adapt. If your berserkers struggle, but the possessed are holding their own, send the termies to help the berserkers, not the possessed (just an example!). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Key to all of this is playing to your unit's strengths: don't send berserkers against MEQs, unless you outnumber them by a lot. Don't send your maulerfiend against a blob unit. It's common sense! </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7wG07nqZLg8/UkCiJKQsUSI/AAAAAAAAAYU/OpeE2YPvSyI/s640/blogger-image-288123487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7wG07nqZLg8/UkCiJKQsUSI/AAAAAAAAAYU/OpeE2YPvSyI/s320/blogger-image-288123487.jpg" width="256" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ty22ks6_pzE/UkCiHUoRq8I/AAAAAAAAAYM/02mU5UtXhLg/s640/blogger-image-2123145913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ty22ks6_pzE/UkCiHUoRq8I/AAAAAAAAAYM/02mU5UtXhLg/s320/blogger-image-2123145913.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And play the odds! Remember that Dark Angels player I mentioned in the last post? He took down aircraft in a way I hadn't seen before (its more common now): he pushed bikes behind it and fired a lot of twin linked bolters at the rear armour (10 on most!). It works, and it removes threats without a need for an AA unit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just to round up, have a plan, stick to it, assign targets to your units, play to their strengths, be willing to adapt, and play to the odds! It's not too hard!!</div>

Part 1NO. That's right, competitive play is not a thing of the past. Period.<br />
<div>
Every army has its competitive builds, and its units that aren't so good. But some people can't get that through their thick skulls. </div>

<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
I've lost track of the number of times I've seen people posting on forums, or in the comments section of blogs, about how 6th ed. has killed off the competitive side of the game. Posts like "6th ed is great, but it's still just a game of Rock Paper Scissors in the end" or "d_monik said - "why can't they go back to posting competitive list articles like in the good old days?" Simple - this is 6th edition. The rules are now awful, there are no competitive lists but Tau, and basically everyone is no longer playing." are really getting on my nerves, and it was the second one there that pushed me to write this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll answer the quotes above first, before going on to explain myself. The first one is obvious enough: if you believe that, then you should just play that rather than paying as much as we do to be in this hobby. The second one is more difficult. I do believe however that it is totally wrong. I can't speak for every local meta, but here in Dublin, I have seen EVERY army played competitively. From Tau, to Sisters, each army is played here, and they are played competitively. I believe the reason that Tau are considered by some to be overly powerful or the only competitive army, is because they are relatively easy to play. The only thing you need to know is what to shoot with which guns, and target prioritisation. Even a relatively new player can play Tau well with a little practice. Other armies simply take more getting to know.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-AgWRQQaZdWQ/UjspeWJBxCI/AAAAAAAAAXk/HFfok4gJbek/s640/blogger-image-593445093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-AgWRQQaZdWQ/UjspeWJBxCI/AAAAAAAAAXk/HFfok4gJbek/s400/blogger-image-593445093.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'll give a little anecdotal evidence and end part one. One of the armies most complained about is Dark Angels. One of the best players in my FLGS plays Dark Angels and I have yet to see him lose. He plays ravenwing heavy, with some tactical squads, and a handful of vehicles. And he kicks ass with it. He's played since the new codex dropped, and though I didn't see him at the start (I had exams), I heard he lost a few times. He got to know his list, and his codex, though and now he wins regularly. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Another army that supposedly sucks is the chaos marine dex. Unless you use heldrake or cultist spam. I had a brief spell with the chaos marines before the summer. I built (not painted!) a 1500 points list based around Khorne. I've read numerous articles saying that berserkers suck. I won with them, because of how I used them. I presented my opponent with 5-6 close combat orientated units charging on turn 3. That's a scary prospect for any player. And it worked. Despite people imparting their "expert" advice on why not to use these units, they are usable, good even if in the right hands. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
This is already getting too long, so part two will be up soon. This will give more detail, on why I think competitive play is still very real, despite having changed greatly.</div>

This is just a quick post, to show my progress on the Iron Lords (ie not much). I already had <a href="http://17yearoldhobbyist.blogspot.ie/2013/07/the-first-iron-lord-model.html#more">this guy</a> done and the other two in the picture were painted as I was trying to figure out the quickest way to paint these guys. The remainder of the squad are in the process of being batch painted, but may not be done for a while (college starts this week). I'll have WIP pics soon, and pics when they're done. For now, here are the two new guys:<br />

I'm looking for advice on buying greenstuff online. I found <a href="http://www.sylmasta.com/acatalog/Creative_Kneadatite_Putties.html">this website</a> and a bit of research seems to show that it this company that produces the greenstuff for Games Workshop. That is why I wanted to buy it elsewhere: It's €9 for 8 inches of the stuff from Games Workshop, €11 for 36 inches from this crowd!!<br />
<br />
I'm planning on buying tubes of blue and yellow so none of it has begun to set.<br />
<br />
At the same time I need new knife blades and thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. So does anyone know what size blades the GW knife uses?<br />
<br />
The main purpose of this post is to see if anyone knows if this website is trustworthy. It doesn't accept paypal so I have to be absolutely sure about it. So far, they have been on time, good quality and now I know they have excellent customer service.<br />
<a name='more'></a>The first order was only a few bits, nothing major. I ordered it on a Friday, and the second Monday, it arrived. Everything was there, it arrived within the stated timeframe for EU customers, and the shipping rates were quite reasonable.<br />
For my second order, I got a lot more. Shoulder pads of various sizes, forge world lightening claws, various bolters (I'll post on most of these next week), as well as five shields, one of which I used on the <a href="http://17yearoldhobbyist.blogspot.ie/2013/08/nurgle-chaos-lord-finished.html">Nurgle Lord</a> I just finished and other bits and pieces. I deliberately went over £20 to get free shipping! That's a great deal, any day of the week. I ordered it again as a Friday, and it arrived on a Monday again. I opened it up, and... there was a bit missing. It wasn't major, and I didn't need it urgently. I looked up the website, and they had a page dedicated to it. I filled in the form, and it sent an email to the owner. I got a computerized response that he'd get right on it. Then nothing. Then, on Monday, I got the bit in the post. No warning, no email... This one's for you ThirdEyeNuke</div>
Warning: work required!!<br />
That out of the way, here's the rack I use to store my paints:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nX7LainmQdQ/Uh457Q2qK3I/AAAAAAAAAUA/ZyiBGfMhGRc/s1600/IMG_2007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nX7LainmQdQ/Uh457Q2qK3I/AAAAAAAAAUA/ZyiBGfMhGRc/s320/IMG_2007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
This is a life saver. before I built this, my desk was a mess of paint pots, all taking over my work space. I thought about posting it up but in the end, I decided not to. Then I saw <a href="http://taleofpainters.blogspot.ie/2013/08/chat-thirdeyenuke-desk-setup.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+taleofpainters_posts+(Stahly's+Tale+of+Painters)">this post</a> over on tale of painters. That desk is madness, no offence to ThirdEyeNuke. I offered to post this, to show how I built a paint rack.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<a href="" name="more"></a>First up: tools. Most of these are common DIY tools except the hole saw. You can pick one up for €15 in most hardware stores, but luckily I was able to borrow one.<br />
1. saw (preferably a jig-saw)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwjDDu80vNw/Uh5CiKGZGCI/AAAAAAAAAVs/r9zblgYJffY/s1600/hole+saw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwjDDu80vNw/Uh5CiKGZGCI/AAAAAAAAAVs/r9zblgYJffY/s1600/hole+saw.jpg" /></a></div>
2. Electric drill<br />
3. hole-saw (on the left)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, I have no WIP pictures so I drew some sketches instead. The first one is simply getting some terms straight: the length and height of the rack. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SV8vgUGX5_0/Uh49SRPJTHI/AAAAAAAAAU0/bQwOrXkuo7A/s1600/IMG_2008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SV8vgUGX5_0/Uh49SRPJTHI/AAAAAAAAAU0/bQwOrXkuo7A/s320/IMG_2008.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step1. Buy a sheet of MDF as wide as the length you want your rack to be, twice as long as the height you want your rack to be and about 5 or 6 mm thick. Then cut the sheet in half, so you have two pieces, each the size you want the rack to be.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BRN1Kh8E7ns/Uh49qjdLXqI/AAAAAAAAAU8/rhh7M-VMWzg/s1600/IMG_2009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BRN1Kh8E7ns/Uh49qjdLXqI/AAAAAAAAAU8/rhh7M-VMWzg/s320/IMG_2009.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On one piece, drill holes using the hole saw. These will be where the paint pots go. For citadel paints, I used a 39mm hole-saw. One thing to note though, you have to leave appropriate space between the holes, or the wood will collapse under the weight. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EHeNrRtAllc/Uh494O59UqI/AAAAAAAAAVM/HOOM5JO5nzU/s1600/IMG_2011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EHeNrRtAllc/Uh494O59UqI/AAAAAAAAAVM/HOOM5JO5nzU/s320/IMG_2011.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a sketch of one of the batons that I used to build the rack. The height is the height of the rack. You can actually cut the height short a little. Again, this can be bought in any hardware store. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ngXgq18_DLY/Uh49-P-t07I/AAAAAAAAAVU/6IzP489AZ_0/s1600/IMG_2012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ngXgq18_DLY/Uh49-P-t07I/AAAAAAAAAVU/6IzP489AZ_0/s320/IMG_2012.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next sketch is how I mounted the back piece and batons on the wall. The back piece was screwed to the wall, then I glued the batons to it using regular wood glue. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r-oiPmCWwlI/Uh4-GYUE0OI/AAAAAAAAAVc/tneHmjzZbsg/s1600/IMG_2013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r-oiPmCWwlI/Uh4-GYUE0OI/AAAAAAAAAVc/tneHmjzZbsg/s320/IMG_2013.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last step is to glue the front piece to the back piece. Allow 24 hours to dry before putting any paint in it. Just to note, if you're using larger paint pots (taller than the citadel ones) you may need to use thicker batons, to put more space between the two pieces of MDF</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
There you have it, critique away.17yearoldhobbyisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09528253151940087048noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830152544848840124.post-28942331659781947282013-08-27T21:37:00.000+01:002013-08-27T21:37:47.554+01:00Nurgle Chaos Lord Finished<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lrrlEiFtADo/Uh0BzodZ1UI/AAAAAAAAAS8/DfPjrYX6KoA/s1600/IMG_1990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lrrlEiFtADo/Uh0BzodZ1UI/AAAAAAAAAS8/DfPjrYX6KoA/s400/IMG_1990.JPG" width="297" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here he is, completely finished, ready for the competition on Saturday. He was a blast to paint, simple as. Basically, he had lots of stuff that I don't normally paint. I really had fun and can't wait to see how he does. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From previous competitions, I know that the standard will be high. As an example, this squad won gold in the UK Golden Demon for 40k Squad. The painter, is from Dublin. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MiJhdlRWwtw/Uh0GsgnS_FI/AAAAAAAAATg/q5h2YGz7OuE/s1600/cat_02_40k_squad_gold.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="459" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MiJhdlRWwtw/Uh0GsgnS_FI/AAAAAAAAATg/q5h2YGz7OuE/s640/cat_02_40k_squad_gold.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
So, on with the model. The picture below is the shield he's carrying, which bears the symbol of the Nurgle fly. This was fun as the most freehand I usually do is a basic shoulder pad chapter symbol on marines. I'm planning a banner bearer for my marines so there'll be some freehand on that. You may remember, I said that I had a banner for him. The banner looked great (if I do say so myself), but it had a myriad of problems when I attached it to the model. It was top heavy, dominated the model and simply looked wrong.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SOKymd9ifQY/Uh0B4dEIGtI/AAAAAAAAATE/3VcJ66E51as/s1600/IMG_1992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SOKymd9ifQY/Uh0B4dEIGtI/AAAAAAAAATE/3VcJ66E51as/s400/IMG_1992.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a shot of his back, with the skin and open wounds. This was my favourite part of the whole model. Unfortunately the pic doesn't show it up great, I'll try to get better ones over the week. It was really fun as, again, I don't get to paint much skin (noticing a pattern here?)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dQeNlNW3H6I/Uh0B8FGyygI/AAAAAAAAATM/XuuHqgchozs/s1600/IMG_1993.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dQeNlNW3H6I/Uh0B8FGyygI/AAAAAAAAATM/XuuHqgchozs/s400/IMG_1993.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
The axe, again was great fun (that's right, I don't paint much rust). There's not much more to say. I'll have a tutorial in a while, as well as some for things like the cloth, skin horns etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OKCKMQmJPQU/Uh0B93nOucI/AAAAAAAAATU/FlRcXIWzM34/s1600/IMG_1994.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OKCKMQmJPQU/Uh0B93nOucI/AAAAAAAAATU/FlRcXIWzM34/s400/IMG_1994.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I already said that the standard will be high in this competition, and honestly, I don't expect to win anything. Nonetheless, I'm hoping for some compliments on him and I'm looking forward to seeing how he sizes up to the other entries. Regardless of how he does, I'm happy with how he turned out: he's definitely my best miniature so far. I now give you free reign: critique away!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This guy is now done, except for the banner he's going to be holding in his left hand. That's built, ready for painting. I'll go through him, bit by bit when he's completely finished. for now, the basics of certain parts.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R5Uz6aJNaPQ/UhZopgNcjNI/AAAAAAAAASY/UqqZzFu0D2o/s1600/IMG_1960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R5Uz6aJNaPQ/UhZopgNcjNI/AAAAAAAAASY/UqqZzFu0D2o/s320/IMG_1960.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The axe is basically a variety of browns, oranges and metallics, drybrushed over each other, followed by a metallic weathering powder</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--xqxSkcpMO4/UhZol8LD1eI/AAAAAAAAASQ/to5yiv2wJkI/s1600/IMG_1962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--xqxSkcpMO4/UhZol8LD1eI/AAAAAAAAASQ/to5yiv2wJkI/s320/IMG_1962.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The purple cloth was part accident, part experiment; I painted it up as normal (basecoat and two highlights), then went to wash it, and dipped my brush in the wrong pot: Biel Tan Green. I noticed it but decided to try it out, just for a laugh. I was surprised by the result. It makes it look, well,dirty. The picture doesn't really do it justice though.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The base is from Secret Weapon Miniatures. It's painted in a variety of reds, then covered over with a mix of realistic water, Bloodletter and Carrobourg Crimson.</div>

He's coming along nicely, slowly but surely. The armour just needs the metallic weathering powder, when the models done, the axe needs to be done, the skulls etc. need to be painted, the horns need a bit more work and the gore, intestines and cloth are all done. Hopefully the next update will be the finished model and a few how to's!<br>

<br>
The day of the painting competition, theres also two speed painting contests. One of them I'm considering entering: you buy a plastic character (like the lord above) and have two hours to build it and paint it! I'm thinking of painting the necromancer (I love the model!), but am undecided.<br>

As a final note, I hit 500 page views earlier today! Thank You!!<br>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QiZ-PUzvII8/Uf1SawZb9bI/AAAAAAAAAQg/nAd2fyOhtko/s1600/IMG_1718.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QiZ-PUzvII8/Uf1SawZb9bI/AAAAAAAAAQg/nAd2fyOhtko/s320/IMG_1718.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the Nurgle Chaos Lord fully built. He was done before I painted the stealth suit in my last post but I nearly chickened out out of painting him. Not fully, but I might have left him until the last minute and not painted him well. I was really nervous about painting this guy as he was going to be an experiment in a lot of things. I'll get to that later though!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />

<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here he is in comparison to a firewarrior.</td></tr>

The model was fun to build. The pieces that went together fit like a dream, and those that didn't (both hands were repositioned a bit) only took a little cut and a bit of greenstuff to make it work.<br />

This is the skin tone I was aiming for. It's from <a href="http://www.paintbrushmonster.com/2012/01/nurgle-chaos-lord/">this blog</a>. I like the purple tone to the skin and I wanted something similar to it. But not quite as purple.<br />

<br />
Here is my try at it. It was tough enough (I'll explain in a minute) but I got through it. It began with a basecoat of Cadian Fleshtone and Xereus purple. I then gave it a LIGHT wash of Druchii Violet. I added a little more flesh into the original mix and layered that onto the skin. Next came another LIGHT wash of Druchii Violet. I then added yet more flesh into the mix and put on another layer. Next, I added more flesh into the mix and added some Kislev Flesh. This was layered on and then I washed the whole thing with Bugmans Glow.<br />
<div>
It's worth noting that a wet palette was key in painting the skin. I'll have a post up on that soon but I have to point out here that it wouldn't have been possible without it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was nervous to paint him for various reasons, despite that though he's been a blast to paint so far.<br />
The reasons I've been nervous about painting him all fall under the single fact that he's a huge experiment. I'm not great with skin (I paint mostly armoured models) so he was an experiment in that regard. I'm also going to use some weathering powders (from <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=37&zenid=27dc9029108f158e5afeb2bcb2ec9ba1">Secret Weapon Miniatures</a>) for the first time. Gulp! Plus, I'm giving him a banner... made of greenstuff... with a relatively complex design on it. </div>
<div>
Am I in over my head?</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So here is the first of soon to be five XV25 stealth suits. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
This guy was done with the same idea as the model below but with the "active camo" being the same colours as the base. I also wanted to avoid really light, contrasting highlights. This defies the whole point of the "stealth" if the highlights really stand out!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5bLJkV_N_EM/Ufq7BbTDuVI/AAAAAAAAAQA/CKhieoAy7sY/s1600/xv15-02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5bLJkV_N_EM/Ufq7BbTDuVI/AAAAAAAAAQA/CKhieoAy7sY/s320/xv15-02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first step was to prime black using the Chaos Black spray. Simple enough! Then the hard part. Well, it's not really difficult, but it does take a long time to do... A really long time. The first highlight was mechanicus standard grey, with a second layer of dawnestone at corners etc. I then tidied up the highlights with Abaddon Black... And encountered a major problem: the spray and paint, are very, very different. The spray is a "flat" black (I don't know how else to describe it) while the paint was kind of shiny. I fixed it though in the third step. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M5Y12Y4DjZs/Ufq4YnTLxuI/AAAAAAAAAOI/pjo0Njfhu2k/s1600/IMG_1761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M5Y12Y4DjZs/Ufq4YnTLxuI/AAAAAAAAAOI/pjo0Njfhu2k/s320/IMG_1761.JPG" width="239" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then basecoated the equipment with Mechanicus Standard Grey and highlighted with dawnstone (hard to see in the pic. Sorry!).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0sgp0fdPhc/Ufq4ifuilyI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/kPfxYbJnvNc/s1600/IMG_1762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0sgp0fdPhc/Ufq4ifuilyI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/kPfxYbJnvNc/s320/IMG_1762.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up, a heavy wash of Nuln Oil. This is a life saver: it dulls down the the highlights, shades the grey, and best of all, removes the difference between the two black paints. Phew!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wc2EHc0GoDU/Ufq4rkhSiXI/AAAAAAAAAOg/WH8zKYYB_aU/s1600/IMG_1766.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wc2EHc0GoDU/Ufq4rkhSiXI/AAAAAAAAAOg/WH8zKYYB_aU/s320/IMG_1766.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9prPBYqyqqs/Ufq4kjydlTI/AAAAAAAAAOY/yqgHAqYuZ3o/s1600/IMG_1764.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9prPBYqyqqs/Ufq4kjydlTI/AAAAAAAAAOY/yqgHAqYuZ3o/s320/IMG_1764.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is how I hang my models up to dry: the antenna didn't get a wash as it is going to be green</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The red on the model was done using a sponge. (note to self: post on that at some stage)<br />
It's just Khorne red sponged on in a rough pattern, with Wazdakka red sponged on inside the lines of Khorne red.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l5dW_VxVgDQ/Ufq45Kgi1XI/AAAAAAAAAO4/PqoqQNO8EcM/s1600/IMG_1772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l5dW_VxVgDQ/Ufq45Kgi1XI/AAAAAAAAAO4/PqoqQNO8EcM/s320/IMG_1772.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ICX7u9vbnA/Ufq40ozYYXI/AAAAAAAAAOw/uHQIBOLIbyA/s1600/IMG_1771.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ICX7u9vbnA/Ufq40ozYYXI/AAAAAAAAAOw/uHQIBOLIbyA/s320/IMG_1771.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The green on the antenna and squad markings is moot green, with the antenna washed with Biel-Tan green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gt59dQQabRY/Ufq5CEterbI/AAAAAAAAAPA/dJmr5ALxSWc/s1600/IMG_1774.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gt59dQQabRY/Ufq5CEterbI/AAAAAAAAAPA/dJmr5ALxSWc/s320/IMG_1774.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The energy effect is painted with Temple Guard blue, and then Barroth blue. This needs a bit of refinement but I've a few models to go. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gzE-HMBmFqA/Ufq5Dd3cLbI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/8-TAyz9JqNA/s1600/IMG_1777.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gzE-HMBmFqA/Ufq5Dd3cLbI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/8-TAyz9JqNA/s320/IMG_1777.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I painted the "active camo" with Castellan green, sponged with Doombull brown, and then washed with Athonian Camoshade. In hindsight, I should have used a second wash. Great thing, hindsight!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nmmYVwIcuHM/Ufq5PGb29iI/AAAAAAAAAPg/PBh2PDI7oIk/s1600/IMG_1778.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nmmYVwIcuHM/Ufq5PGb29iI/AAAAAAAAAPg/PBh2PDI7oIk/s320/IMG_1778.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The base is done as per <a href="http://17yearoldhobbyist.blogspot.ie/2013/07/swamp-bases-how-to.html">this tutorial</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
And here is the finished model. In the bottom photo, you can see the first splash effect I've done on an actual mini. As usual comments and criticism is always welcome!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
These guys have been built for a while but I only got around to taking photos today. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tRqhEyvyRnc/UfbMgViGn2I/AAAAAAAAAMk/kEdAR-uohMc/s1600/IMG_1741.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tRqhEyvyRnc/UfbMgViGn2I/AAAAAAAAAMk/kEdAR-uohMc/s320/IMG_1741.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the Shas'vre (team leader for those yet to see sense and join the Greater Good). He's armed with a fusion blaster and has a target lock as a support system. This lets him blow stuff up, without stopping the unit hailing nearby squads with anti infantry firepower. He is however magnetised so he can swap out his fusion blaster for a burst cannon, like the rest of the squad.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0-rAmncRCo/UfbMmU07Q9I/AAAAAAAAAMs/8ybyNdsgaZ4/s1600/IMG_1743.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0-rAmncRCo/UfbMmU07Q9I/AAAAAAAAAMs/8ybyNdsgaZ4/s320/IMG_1743.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is one of soon to be four Shas'ui armed with a burst cannon. He too is magnetised. He has been repositioned to be running.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r__0gIqaEU/UfbMrEd8zYI/AAAAAAAAAM0/x-0ClJgclII/s1600/IMG_1748.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r__0gIqaEU/UfbMrEd8zYI/AAAAAAAAAM0/x-0ClJgclII/s320/IMG_1748.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the second Shas'ui I have at the moment. Again, he has been magnetised and positioned to be running.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, onto repositioning the legs. Short version: DON'T!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's a bit of a pain. Well, to clarify, the first step is. The rest is dead easy to anyone who converts models regularly.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Step 1: cut the joints you want to reposition completely. First score the whole way around the joint. Then cut it right through. This is the hard part as the joints on these guys are not straight across. It requires more than a little fiddling around with the knife to get it right. Be damn careful doing this as one slip and you're in hospital (I've done it myself!) .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z1paEcfRx28/UfbMXhrrhlI/AAAAAAAAAMU/iBhuXn6B7dg/s1600/IMG_1649.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z1paEcfRx28/UfbMXhrrhlI/AAAAAAAAAMU/iBhuXn6B7dg/s320/IMG_1649.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Step 2: use a hobby knife to score pilot holes in the middle of each cut surface and drill a few mm in to the limb.Put a pin in one of the holes and bend it until the other side is pointing the way you want the second piece to be pointing. Glue the pin into both holes</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8jcvHCFluXA/UfbM22s9_-I/AAAAAAAAANM/v-rl79JUbDU/s1600/IMG_1750.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8jcvHCFluXA/UfbM22s9_-I/AAAAAAAAANM/v-rl79JUbDU/s320/IMG_1750.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="239" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0zkeXFeZcEo/UfbMb4WzexI/AAAAAAAAAMc/QxOKGQk50-I/s1600/IMG_1650.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0zkeXFeZcEo/UfbMb4WzexI/AAAAAAAAAMc/QxOKGQk50-I/s320/IMG_1650.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Step 3: fill in the resulting gaps with greenstuff. Simple.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fSE-UvfR534/UfbM3TNJ5wI/AAAAAAAAANU/C5jc_1-X54Y/s1600/IMG_1752.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fSE-UvfR534/UfbM3TNJ5wI/AAAAAAAAANU/C5jc_1-X54Y/s320/IMG_1752.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P07hzeZTT_M/UfbM1cTV0hI/AAAAAAAAANE/W69ey-PAHOY/s1600/IMG_1751.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P07hzeZTT_M/UfbM1cTV0hI/AAAAAAAAANE/W69ey-PAHOY/s320/IMG_1751.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And here's the magnets on one of the models. These are dead easy; drill, and glue!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As a side note, I said in my last post that I was planning to enter these in a painting competition but after careful deliberation, I've decided not to for one simple reason: I'm painting them as part of an army. They'll stand out if painted to a higher standard than the rest of the army. So, I've decided to leave them out of the competition.17yearoldhobbyisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09528253151940087048noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830152544848840124.post-53488149751586226502013-07-26T22:29:00.001+01:002013-07-28T17:34:38.675+01:00National Painting CompetitionThis is simply an update post. I'm taking a break from painting my firewarriors for a short while to take part in this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fmYYaTqoN_E/UfLg8qs_A7I/AAAAAAAAAL0/yXFTGKYlptU/s1600/national+painting+competition.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fmYYaTqoN_E/UfLg8qs_A7I/AAAAAAAAAL0/yXFTGKYlptU/s400/national+painting+competition.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is being billed as the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GWDublin">national painting competition</a> but seeing as there is only one GW store in the country, it's basically a store competition. Nonetheless, I'm entering it for the fun of it. I'm planning on entering a stealth suit squad that I've built and a converted Nurgle Chaos Lord that I'm getting tomorrow. Basically I'm going to concentrate on these two entries until they're done, then return to the fire warriors.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The stealth suits as I said are built and I'll post them soon along with a built crisis suit and my WIP firewarriors. They have all been reposed and magnetised. The stealth suits are going to be painted up in a similar style to this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yA7Dsq6LY8s/UfLoTzruDfI/AAAAAAAAAME/Il8er2j2yXA/s1600/xv15-02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yA7Dsq6LY8s/UfLoTzruDfI/AAAAAAAAAME/Il8er2j2yXA/s320/xv15-02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The colours though will be the regular red and black with the changed area (brown on this guy) being the same as the bases. Simple (I hope!)!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Lord however will be a bit more involved so I'll only post about him when I've got him built, but basically he's an experiment with skin and rust (and maybe weathering pigments) and a chance to paint a model that I absolutely love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll have the suits up in the next few days as well as the firewarriors. Until then, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">just kidding!</td></tr>

That's right I've put it up online. I love Finecast. Send all of your friends who disagree here to have their say (and boost my pageviews). This post came from a culmination of different complaints about Finecast online. The straw that broke the camel's back was the second comment on <a href="http://tauofwar.blogspot.ie/2013/07/road-where-were-going-we-dont-need-roads.html">this post</a>. I am now sick of seeing all of these complaints, so I thought I'd stick up for it.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Finecast has a lot of things going for it, but first, I'll go with the downsides: 1. It has some bubbles... sometimes. 2. It is a little warped... sometimes.<br />
1. The bubbles are really not a problem. a little greenstuff and they're gone. If you use it even a tiny bit of the stuff to repose models or fill in gaps, filling in bubbles is absolutely no problem.<br />
2. The warping isn't a problem either. Forge World stuff has it as well and it only takes a dip in warm water to fix.<br />
<br />
Now, the positives: 1. It's light. 2. It's easy to work with. 3. It has crisp detail.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
1. If a model is light, it is easy to transport, it doesn't topple over and this means that dynamic poses are easier to get, and more viable. This can only be a good thing, can't it? personally I think that this is great, not only for how handy it is, but also, because the quality of miniatures is going up all of the time.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2PNY61Pj_Eg/UehTmXob05I/AAAAAAAAAK0/0jvOBl8D7BA/s1600/CommanderFarsight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="229" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2PNY61Pj_Eg/UehTmXob05I/AAAAAAAAAK0/0jvOBl8D7BA/s320/CommanderFarsight.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Would this pose be possible in metal?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. I personally love converting. It is among my favourite aspects of the hobby and I find it difficult to resist tampering with a model. With Finecast, this is easier than ever before. It's a pain to convert with metal but with Finecast, the sky's the limit.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bPdJGpzYDJQ/UehTuDLZlrI/AAAAAAAAALM/PHhLG7Lw_Nk/s1600/imagine+this+b4+finecast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="175" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bPdJGpzYDJQ/UehTuDLZlrI/AAAAAAAAALM/PHhLG7Lw_Nk/s320/imagine+this+b4+finecast.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Imagine trying this conversion on a metal model!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3. It has crisp detail, that is clear from the moment you get one in your hands. My first was the savage orc shaman on a boar (yes I dabbled in WFB). The fur was amazingly crisp. It made the texture on the boar boyz seem almost smooth. How can you argue with that.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Soulteu0TNE/UehTyinnsFI/AAAAAAAAALU/FF1ogpGLJ1I/s1600/SavageOrcShamanBoar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="457" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Soulteu0TNE/UehTyinnsFI/AAAAAAAAALU/FF1ogpGLJ1I/s640/SavageOrcShamanBoar.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Look at the sharp details on that model</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
But I digress, this was meant as more as a conversation starter. If you have anything to add please post a comment. Or better yet, if you have a clear, concise argument against Finecast I'd love to hear it.<br />

It needed a cream that required a bandage around it. This made it impossible to hold a miniature steady, so I haven't been able to paint. Instead I got around to a few things I had been meaning to do for a while. One of those things was re-writing my army list.<br />
<br />
I always write an army list before collecting any minis. It may change but it gives me a goal of what I'm going to collect and paint. I've already written one which is <a href="http://17yearoldhobbyist.blogspot.ie/2013/06/tau-empire-plan-part-2.html#more">here</a> but I decided to change it for a variety of reasons. Most of it is for models and units that I like. For example, I'm not sold on the XV8 Crisis suits so I dropped three of them. I love the XV25 Stealth suits models but had none of them in the list. I also love the idea of the Skyray and drones but had none of them either. Unfortunately, to fit all of that in, I had to drop the Riptide but it will feature when the list expands to 1750 or 1850 points. So on with the list:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />

So there it is, tell me what you think. There is all of the basics, anti infantry, anti tank, and anti air, but tell me if i missed something17yearoldhobbyisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09528253151940087048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830152544848840124.post-81754980762395834522013-07-14T17:11:00.000+01:002013-07-14T17:11:09.503+01:00Commander CycloneHere it is, this is how my Tau commander got his name. (note I still have to get the model, but still...)<br />
<br />
"Shas'O Sio'era'sha'is, known to the Imperium as Commander Cyclone, earned his name much as Commander Shadswosun did: through a single decisive victory. In the opening moves of the Ziest Campaign, a planet that was known in the Imperium as Angritus was re-invaded after the Tau conquered it. The Tau had an established colony there and needed plenty of time to evacuate. One by one though the cities fell to the brutal onslaught of Imperial Guardsmen and Space Marines. Only the capital remained in Tau hands, as well as pockets of the countryside. The Coalition Command on the planet faced seemingly only one option: abandon the planet and retreat. Much would be left behind and it would be a bitter blow, but the attack had been too swift and too vicious to repel. As they prepared the final evacuation, the recently promoted commander offered to buy them more time to retreat properly. He believed he could stall the Imperial forces long enough to evacuate all Tau personnel, loyal humans (Gue'vesa) and technology. Though sceptical, the command trusted their military leader and began a thorough and proper evacuation.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The young commander meanwhile journeyed with a single Hunter Cadre to the forests where the Imperial forces established their beachhead. Their commanders were still there, slowly moving closer to the front lines to languish in glory when the planet was secured. They had a large number of guards, at least ten times the number of the Tau stalking them, with armoured contingents of Leman Russes and Chimeras as well as sentinels and artillery. A path through the dense trees had been cleared and as they moved along it, the Tau positioned themselves.<br />
<br />
Without warning, a fusillade of pulse rifle fire came through the trees at the Imperial forces. As one they turned and prepared to fire, but the Tau were long gone and before a single shot was fired, a second attack came, thirty degrees clockwise from the first. Again, every gun turned to face where it came from. More attacks followed and by the time they came back to the original position, the noose had tightened a bit. Some attacks were pulse rifle fire, some railgun and heavy rail rifle fire from hammerheads and broadsides, some burst cannon and fusion blaster shots from crisis and stealth suits. Gradually, the cyclonic pattern of attacks pushed the Imperial forces back towards a central point.<br />
<br />
Too late the Imperial commanders realised what was happening. They were already in the eye of the storm, but it was not calm. It was utter chaos. No-one knew where to fire, soldiers fled in all directions, tanks crushed their own forces in their desperation to find solid targets and the officers bellowed contradicting orders to troops that weren't listening. The army had been pushed into a space many times too small for it and that ended resistance more than the weaponry of the Tau. Before long, the Imperial leaders were dead and all forces on the planet were sent into disarray. The Tau were able to retreat and they escaped the planet at full fighting strength.<br />
<br />
Through it all, a new legend was born: Commander Cyclone, Hero of Au'taal"17yearoldhobbyisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09528253151940087048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830152544848840124.post-48654173431313611062013-07-07T21:35:00.000+01:002013-07-14T17:11:26.875+01:00The First Iron Lord ModelI've been concentrating on my tau of late and my poor marines have been a bit neglected. I'm planning on at least getting a tactical squad before the codex is released (supposedly September but I'm not getting into rumours). In the meantime I have been working on my fire warriors but I got the time to paint up an older model that was only primed. He is going to be a sergeant for the unit as well as a tester for the rest of the army. So here he is.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B1Z-PM2bPMw/UdnGnUSbZJI/AAAAAAAAAI0/bpMPxz3I2c0/s1600/IMG_1540.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B1Z-PM2bPMw/UdnGnUSbZJI/AAAAAAAAAI0/bpMPxz3I2c0/s320/IMG_1540.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
The majority of the model is black so I'll start with that: It began with a spray prime of Chaos Black. I then tidied it up wit Abaddon Black and highlighted it with Mechanicus Standard Grey and in some prominent places, Dawnstone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EJ_MvyFN4Uk/UdnGoRqkUII/AAAAAAAAAI8/60UTcSoqelE/s1600/IMG_1541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EJ_MvyFN4Uk/UdnGoRqkUII/AAAAAAAAAI8/60UTcSoqelE/s320/IMG_1541.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The red is Khorne Red, highlighted with Wazdakka red and then Troll Slayer Orange in places. I then washed it with Carrobourg Crimson.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-laTdj20JjWA/UdnGqNjgVMI/AAAAAAAAAJE/q57lQSstHoM/s1600/IMG_1544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-laTdj20JjWA/UdnGqNjgVMI/AAAAAAAAAJE/q57lQSstHoM/s320/IMG_1544.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The metal is simply Leadbelcher washed with either Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CwbEf-onoI4/UdnGvVDoN2I/AAAAAAAAAJU/bWIRzg2Rjv0/s1600/IMG_1547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CwbEf-onoI4/UdnGvVDoN2I/AAAAAAAAAJU/bWIRzg2Rjv0/s320/IMG_1547.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E-gc2BQ0Ulk/UdnGstHfepI/AAAAAAAAAJM/uDF9ACTuUlQ/s1600/IMG_1546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E-gc2BQ0Ulk/UdnGstHfepI/AAAAAAAAAJM/uDF9ACTuUlQ/s320/IMG_1546.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The Aquila is Warplock Bronze, washed with Agrax Earthshade and then highlighted with Runefang Steel.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sxGcYNJe3bQ/UdnGyKNHNGI/AAAAAAAAAJc/WCk5j5PKgRs/s1600/IMG_1549.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sxGcYNJe3bQ/UdnGyKNHNGI/AAAAAAAAAJc/WCk5j5PKgRs/s320/IMG_1549.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The green is Warpstone Glow, the fist is Celestra Grey with Nuln Oil in the recesses, the sunburst is Ulthuan Grey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XjAG7iqa0OM/UdnG1C80_xI/AAAAAAAAAJk/b_UL5fLHn6g/s1600/IMG_1550.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XjAG7iqa0OM/UdnG1C80_xI/AAAAAAAAAJk/b_UL5fLHn6g/s320/IMG_1550.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
.<br />
The flesh is Bugman's Glow, highlighted with Cadian Fleshtone, then washed with Riekland Flesh. The hair is Rhinox Hide, highlighted with Steel Legion Drab and washed with Agrax Earthshade.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mRc2JkxU-vo/UdnG5QRwOXI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/6OO9BgkycaQ/s1600/IMG_1555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mRc2JkxU-vo/UdnG5QRwOXI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/6OO9BgkycaQ/s320/IMG_1555.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The flex fittings are Mechanicus Standard Grey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oqG2niqKV5c/UdnG8BteyNI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/1wYb_Ere7dw/s1600/IMG_1556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oqG2niqKV5c/UdnG8BteyNI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/1wYb_Ere7dw/s320/IMG_1556.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The purple is Xereus Purple, washed in some places with Druchii Violet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gtmhUrwYDSg/UdnHFMRP5fI/AAAAAAAAAKE/qYM72fSgjkQ/s1600/IMG_1558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gtmhUrwYDSg/UdnHFMRP5fI/AAAAAAAAAKE/qYM72fSgjkQ/s320/IMG_1558.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The snow is just Mourne Mountain Snow and GW modelling snow. I'm still experimenting with the snow and will likely change it for the rest of the army.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rRSQ2ZBlZNg/UdnHLOFQ6nI/AAAAAAAAAKM/ulDw-Jh3HcM/s1600/IMG_1562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rRSQ2ZBlZNg/UdnHLOFQ6nI/AAAAAAAAAKM/ulDw-Jh3HcM/s320/IMG_1562.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
I've magnetised one of his arms because it broke off during a game ages ago and I painted it separately. It helps for transport.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqKAfoZ8UHw/UdnHMsN6gUI/AAAAAAAAAKU/qD8Y1al2S30/s1600/IMG_1571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqKAfoZ8UHw/UdnHMsN6gUI/AAAAAAAAAKU/qD8Y1al2S30/s320/IMG_1571.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
The damage on his legs was sponged on using a make-up applicator, with Mechanicus Standard Grey and some Rhinox Hide<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dn3wL5_m7mk/UdcakOyjBmI/AAAAAAAAAIk/C4Wo2077Rnw/s1600/tau+commander.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dn3wL5_m7mk/UdcakOyjBmI/AAAAAAAAAIk/C4Wo2077Rnw/s400/tau+commander.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
One of the things that will probably come across as I continue to post on this blog is that I love fluff. The stories and background of a race are, for me, as (if not more) important as the miniatures. The minis are the representation of that race on the table-top but the fluff is what brings those pieces of resin, metal and plastic to life. I'll post more on this in the future, this post though is about my own Tau army. I have named every unit after it's leader (the Shas'ui in a fire warrior squad or Shas'vre in a suit unit). This post is about my commander, Commander Cyclone of the Au'taal sept. I will post more on him soon, specifically how he got his name, as well as posting about the other units!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
"Shas'O Au'taal Korst'la Kar'tyr Sio'era'sha'is, more commonly known as O'Sio'era'sha'is or Commander Cyclone, is a senior commander of the Tau Empire. He is widely regarded as the greatest ever hero of Au'taal, having been taught by the AI of Commander Puretide himself. He has won many decisive victories for the Greater Good and none can deny his importance in the Third Sphere Expansion. He has been instrumental in conquering early Septs as the Fire Caste advanced into Imperial space and he has been possibly the most important commander in tying up the Space Marine counter-attack in the Ziest Campaign. O'Shaserra knew that it would come and she needed a skilled leader to run the defensive, preventing Imperial forces from reacting when she advanced into the surrounding sectors: Commander Cyclone was top of the list. Despite this, the Ethereal Council remains wary of his methods and always maintain a close watch on the Commander.<br />
<br />
O'Sio'era'sha'is uses unconventional methods to achieve decisive victories. The Fire Caste academies have always taught that while "Our technology advances through the years; our tactics do not". Commander Cyclone however sees that against the brutal war machine of the Imperium, the Tau Empire's tactics must evolve. Most commanders favour one tactic over others and the best can use all of them when required, O'Shaserra being the prime example. Cyclone though has ruffled more than a few feathers in his time by merging certain aspects of one tactic and other pieces of another to deal with the situations he has faced. Though not dogmatic like the Imperial forces, tactics are ancient and sacred to the Tau and to defile them is sacrilegious. His victories though make this possible to ignore, if not fully accept.<br />
<br />
This alone would not warrant such suspicion from the Ethereal Council though. The real problem is Commander Cyclone's apparant obsession with desperate situations. He attempts to salvage a losing battle have thus far always succeded, especially in the Ziest Campaign where his bold and sometimes seemingly phsycotic actions have pushed the Space Marines back, allowing for a more organised and successful retreat from a planet. As of yet he has yet to incur losses that warrant an order to halt a tactic that seems to be working, but the Ethereal Council believes that he is one error of judgement away from a serious mistake that could cost entire armies. O'Sio'era'sha'is knows this as well and despite his actions seeming oportunistic and brash, he calculates the odds of success thoroughly and weighs up the risks with the possible benefits before making a decision. He has refrained from desperate battles when he believes the odds are unfavourable and so far this has kept him out of trouble with the Ethereals.<br />
<br />
He walks a fine line though and while he has so far erred on the side of trailblazing glory in the name of the Greater Good, a single mistake could leave him in utter disgrace."17yearoldhobbyisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09528253151940087048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6830152544848840124.post-2215782133884901342013-07-02T19:50:00.001+01:002013-07-14T17:10:41.419+01:00Swamp Bases: How ToI'll begin with a disclaimer: the paint scheme is my own work that I tested on several spare bases, the flock though was applied using the techniques explained in <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=23">this</a> video by "misterjustin". So, on with the tutorial.<br />
<br />
First up, I cleaned up the bases, removing the small amount of flash from the edges, then washed them in cool soapy water. This is standard for resin. then, to be sure, I sprayed them with a light dusting of purity seal from GW. This prevents any remaining release agent from damaging the paintjob.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I primed them black with a spray. It was only a light dusting, to get something down so I could basecoat it properly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-49NJ2mV55xM/UdCqfZ5xIyI/AAAAAAAAAHY/41pPlLs3yr4/s1600/IMG_1481.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-49NJ2mV55xM/UdCqfZ5xIyI/AAAAAAAAAHY/41pPlLs3yr4/s320/IMG_1481.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The basecoat is Castellan Green.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tAFLSzDFavo/UdCqo_CJvqI/AAAAAAAAAHo/mxYdEy4Yolw/s1600/IMG_1483.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tAFLSzDFavo/UdCqo_CJvqI/AAAAAAAAAHo/mxYdEy4Yolw/s320/IMG_1483.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I then dry brushed on the old GW Scorched Brown. I have since replaced it with Doombull Brown. I made sure to leave plenty of green in the recesses though.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I washed the whole bases with Athonian Camoshade. This darkened them and tinted them greenish.<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">Finally I drybrushed the brown on again to bring it out a bit more. This is a matter of preference depending on how dark and how brown you want your bases to be.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yJaFhG2c0RE/UdCqrAJOWtI/AAAAAAAAAHw/S1dj7nJxbrA/s1600/IMG_1490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yJaFhG2c0RE/UdCqrAJOWtI/AAAAAAAAAHw/S1dj7nJxbrA/s320/IMG_1490.JPG" width="239" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final stage was to paint the trees on the bases. I wanted them muted, so you'd know what they were but they wouldn't take over the base or the model. I painted them with Rhinox Hide, drybrushed them with Tyrant Skull and finally washed them with Agrax Earthshade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Bl8UyYmN__I/UdMeGht8J2I/AAAAAAAAAH8/WUFSw7A5aso/s1600/IMG_1536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Bl8UyYmN__I/UdMeGht8J2I/AAAAAAAAAH8/WUFSw7A5aso/s320/IMG_1536.JPG" width="239" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In terms of flock, I did the test model's one as they are done in the video above... more or less. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off I made some tufts of field grass, cutting them to the right height and dipping the ends in PVA glue. I then cut the glued ends flat, leaving some glue at the base of the tuft, and attached it to the base with superglue. I attached the clump foliage (underbrush) around the tree, again with superglue. i then mixed the fine earth with PVA glue to make "moss" and "painted" this onto the tree stump. Lastly, I put some silicone sealant around the model's feet and then added water effects.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
The red is Khorne Red, highlighted with Wazdakka Red and Troll Slayer Orange, then washed with Carrobourg Crimson and then shaded with Drakenhof Nightshade in the recesses. This is a tip I read about a long time ago and have used ever since. Shading red with green or blue makes it more vibrant without making it brighter. I love the technique and to be able to do it on a large portion of an army is going to be fun.<br />

I'll plost a step by step soon. They are painted up, then adorned with clump foliage, field grass and fine earth, to make moss on the tree. I then used some silicone sealant around his feet as the water wouldn't be completely smooth and finally filled the base in with water effects.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I got these ages ago but have been really busy so I havn't had time to post this. These bases are from the blasted wetlands range from secret weapon miniatures. In short, they are amazing. they really are beyond belief!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I ordered the <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_30_59&products_id=240">"ALL YOUR "BLASTED WETLANDS" BASES"</a> which gave me 20X25mm bases, 5X40mm bases and two 60mm bases. They are only $36 and for what you get, I'd take that any day. I also ordered the <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=263">"INSTANT SCENERY KIT: WETLANDS"</a>. This is great for adding extra detail to the bases and at only $15, it doesn't break the bank.<br />
So, on to the review:<br />
<br />
The detail is superb. There's n<span style="text-align: center;">othing else to say. I'll let the pics say the rest</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TWhTd6GCFp8/UctiyQqN__I/AAAAAAAAAFo/UH-QOuFndTg/s1600/40mm+bases.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TWhTd6GCFp8/UctiyQqN__I/AAAAAAAAAFo/UH-QOuFndTg/s320/40mm+bases.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uvah6KIo16I/UctjLd2RWcI/AAAAAAAAAFs/WA9cladpEnU/s1600/25mm+bases.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uvah6KIo16I/UctjLd2RWcI/AAAAAAAAAFs/WA9cladpEnU/s320/25mm+bases.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_O8Y9XRomoo/UctjrgnP0fI/AAAAAAAAAF0/UtczSZWz3Dc/s1600/60mm+bases.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_O8Y9XRomoo/UctjrgnP0fI/AAAAAAAAAF0/UtczSZWz3Dc/s320/60mm+bases.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next on the list is quality and for these, it is beyond great. On 27 bases, I couldn't find a single mould line and any bubbles were on the bottom. there was minimal flash and they required very little work other than cleaning the release agent off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have some painted up now and I will post a step by step in the next few days. for now though, I will leave one bit of advice: if you are willing to spend the money and do the work (resin requires more work), these are a must buy. </div>
